Meet Leo — da Vinci Surgical Robot Launch
Cody Regional Health · Surgical Services · 2024

Cody Regional Health was introducing its first surgical robot and the real challenge wasn't just awareness but reassurance. New surgical tech makes people nervous. Nobody loves the idea of a machine doing their surgery or the thought that it's replacing their surgeon. So the launch had to get people excited without feeding that fear.

Instead of leading with all the technical stuff, we introduced the robot like a new employee. We even named it Leo, picked by staff in an internal poll. I worked with our photographer and some of our surgical team right in the surgical room to stage Leo holding different items and that's where the idea really came to life. We broke up all that sterile gray with one warm, kind of playful object in each shot: a "Feel Better Soon" balloon, a fitness watch, and the one I love most, a beat-up cowboy hat. In Wyoming, nothing's more recognizable or more loved than the cowboy, so putting a cowboy hat on the robot made the whole thing feel local and a lot less intimidating. The taglines leaned in too: "He's not all hat and no cowboy."

That's really the whole idea in one shot: sterile background, warm subject. Precise enough to trust, but human enough to actually like.
